Tips: What is leakage current of power line filter?
Leakage current of EMI line filter means the current flow between “phase wire & central wire” and housing (ground) under 250VAC/50Hz. It depends on the common mode capacitor (also called “Y” capacitor) connecting “phase wire & ground” and “central wire & ground”. Leakage current is an important parameter of filter. The larger volume Y capacitor has, the smaller common mode impedance is, and thus common mode noise suppression effect would be better. Leakage current is a performance parameter of line filter, that is, filter performance gets better when leakage current becomes larger. According to different requirements, different safety standard has different rules for leakage current, typical value is 0.5~5.0mA.
Why safety institution required the max allowable leakage current? The purpose is to limit expected grounding return current value. Line to ground capacitor provides the channel flowing to housing for 50Hz/60Hz current. As long as the equipment is earthed, these current will flow in the grounding circuit, and will not cause danger. But we need to know, even if grounding circuit is reliable, it still maybe loss effect, that is, at the time grounding circuit communication might through human body. To avoid this happening, it must limit maximum leakage current parameter, making grounding return current as a safety value, and typical value is 0.5 to 5.0mA.
