Tips: How does the DC brushless motor brake?
DC brushless motor realize quick braking through the motor itself. There are two simple methods, one is the dynamic braking, another is the short circuit brake. Dynamic braking means to consume the kinetic energy of the motor on the external brake resistor, while short circuit brake consumes the kinetic energy of the brushless motor on the stator winding. Obviously, dynamic braking is more beneficial to reduce motor heating. However, short circuit brake does not require any modification to hardware, simple and convenience are its advantages.
In the so-called short circuit brake, upper bridge arms (or lower bridge arms) on the motor's driving MOS pipe are connected while the lower bridge arms (or upper bridge arms) are disconnected when braking, three phase stator winding of the BLDC motor are all short circuited. The generator in the state of power generation is equivalent to the short circuit of power supply. Resistance of the winding is relatively small, so it can produce a large short-circuit current, and kinetic energy of the motor can be released quickly, so that the motor instantaneously produces a great braking torque, which can realize rapid braking. The higher the motor speed, the larger the short-circuit current, the greater the braking force. However, it must be taken into account that the braking force can't exceed the bearing capacity of MOS pipe, therefore, short circuit brake is generally used when the motor speed is reduced to a certain value.
