Tips: Classification of stepper motor according to the phase number of stepper motor rotor
According to the phase number of stepper motor, the stepper motor is divided into single-phase, 2-phase, 3-phase, 4-phase and 5-phase stepper motors, in which 2-phase stepper motor is most common and also the cheapest.
Magnetic torque of single-phase stepper motor is only generated when the rotor current is transformed and its average torque is smaller a lot than that of 2-pahse stepper motor. Meanwhile, its response frequency is also very low. Its purpose is greatly limited. It only could run under light load of low pulse frequency, like clock, vehicle timer and water meter counter, etc.
2-pahse stepper motor is the most common, featuring large usage quantity, cheap unit price and most sizes of flange. The typical stepping angle of 2-phase stepper motor is 1.8° and 0.9°, in which 1.8° is the most common. Without special reason, it is necessary to give priority in choosing 2-phase stepper motor as its unit price is cheap.
3-phase stepper motor has advantage over rotational smoothness especially the smoothness of rotation at low velocity and controlling attenuation of torque at high velocity. The typical step angle of 3-phase stepper motor is 1.2°. Meanwhile, a few of step angle is 0.6°. The larger size of stepper motor is, the faster the torque at high velocity attenuates. Therefore, the size of 3-phase stepper motor is generally larger. The holding torque of 3-phase stepper motor in the same size is smaller than that of 2-pahse stepper motor. Only the velocity reaches certain one, the working torque of 3-pahse stepper motor will exceed that of 2-phase stepper motor.
As for 4-phase stepper motor, the power tube of drive circuit and the main pole number of rotor is double of that of 2-pahse stepper motor. Thus, its driver features complicated structure and high cost. The stepper motor with 2-phase unipolar drive is called 4-phase stepper motor.
5-pahse stepper motor has good performance in rotational smoothness and controlling attenuation of torque at high velocity, but the cost is the highest. The step angle of 5-pahse stepper motor is 0.72°.
