Tips: How to test an electromagnetic relay?

  1. Test of coil resistance: use multimeter to measure resistance of relay coil to judge whether the coil is bothered with open circuit. Resistance of the relay coil is closely related to its working voltage and working current. Working voltage and working current of the coil can be calculated according to its resistance.
  2. Test of contact resistance: turn the multimeter to its resistance mode and use it to measure resistance of normally closed contact and movable contact. Their resistance is supposed to be 0. If resistance appears unstable or bigger than the value, that means the contract is bothered with poor contact. If the resistance of the normally open contact and movable contact appears infinite, the condition shall be judged as contact adhesion. By this way, users can distinguish which one is normally closed contact, which one is normally open contact and whether the relay is in good condition (especially for used relay).

About polarity
When connecting to the coil at 7 and 8 does polarity matter when connected or no? I’m guessing not since current in either direction will energize the coil either way but not sure if there is a diode for protection in place these connections. Thank you.

ATO Responded
The 24VDC coil of the relay has positive and negative polarity, pin 7 is 0V, and pin 8 is +24VDC.
For my water conditioning system
I have a water conditioning system in my unheated garage. This electromagnetic relay in conjunction with a old style thermostat and incandescent light keep the enclosure above 40 DegF. I will order more.

Perfect 8-pin electromagnetic relay
I was building a custom sound system in my project car requiring the placement of the amp and crossovers in an accessible location. So I incorporated this 8 pin electromagnetic relay to connect the fans to the amp power source when the radio was on. And the system works perfectly.
