Tips: How efficient is a buck converter at low load conditions?
Under low load conditions, the efficiency of the DC-DC buck converter may decrease. This is because at low loads, the converter output current is small, and the converter itself requires a certain amount of static power dissipation to maintain operation. In this case, the fixed losses of the converter are relatively high, resulting in a decrease in efficiency. In order to improve efficiency under low load, the following measures are usually taken: using switchable operating modes, such as PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) and PFM (Pulse Frequency Modulation) to reduce static power consumption; optimizing circuit design, including selecting appropriate Inductor and capacitor values, reduce switching losses, etc.; use dynamic power management technology to dynamically adjust the converter operating status according to load requirements. These methods help improve efficiency at low load conditions and enable DC-DC step down converters to achieve high-efficiency conversion under various load conditions.
