    Application

    This series of air-cooled electric spindle motors mainly match with variable frequency drives or engraving machines, and CNC router machines, and are used for high-speed profiling, drilling, cutting, engraving, and groove milling of wood, metal, plastics, foam, rubber, and other materials.

    Note: Ensure that the spindle motor and VFD are compatible. The VFD’s specifications and parameter settings must align with the spindle motor’s nominal parameters. Incorrect settings can lead to spindle motor damage or burnout.

    Tips: Speed Range of Spindle Motor in CNC Machine When Processing

    Under normal processing conditions, the main parameter affecting the tool life of a woodworking engraving machine is spindle motor speed. Under the same conditions, the lower the spindle motor speed, the longer the tool life. In order to prolong the service life of the tool, it is desirable to set a lower spindle speed, but the speed of the spindle motor can not be reduced indefinitely. When the speed of the spindle motor is too low, the cutting force becomes larger at the same feed speed, which makes the tool unbearable. So there is a reasonable rotational speed range for the spindle when processing certain materials.

    Safety Tips for Using ATO CNC Spindle Motors

    1. The electric spindle motor and VFD shall be suitable with each other. The specifications and parameter settings of the VFD shall match the nominal parameters of the spindle motor, and it will burn the spindle motor if the settings are not correct.

    2. Before using water-cooled spindle motor, it shall ensure that cooling cycle system works normally and the running under no cooling conditions is prohibited. The volume of cooling water is calculated as per 1 liter/minute, the minimum flow of cooling water is not less than 5 liter/minute, cooling water pipe and the nozzle shall be connected reliably and there is no leakage.

    3. The cooling liquid shall be clean and free of grease and the temperature shall be within 5-30℃. The cooling medium shall carry out force cooling when the ambient temperature is higher than 30℃. The precision lathe requires the cooling liquid with a constant temperature of 20 +/-2℃.

    4. During storage and transport of the spindle motor, the status of high-speed grease inside the bearing will change. The user shall run it at a low speed first by starting from the lowest speed of the spindle motor for 30 minutes and then 20 minutes for every 3000 rounds. Otherwise there will have abnormal sound, noise, heat and other phenomena, which will affect the bearing life if the spindle motor is started directly at a high speed. During long term storage, the spindle motor shall run (at low speed) for 15-30 minutes once a week at least.

    5. Collet, nut and inner taper hole shall be washed clean when installing blades on the spindle motor in order to avoid any impact on the precision. The blade handle shall be inserted into the collet more than 15mm.

    6. For daily machining, the spindle motor shall be warmed up, run for 15-20 minutes when the machining speed is reached and then performs precise machining. It is better to stop the spindle motor for two hours every day in order to recover its mechanical fatigue and prolong its life time.

    7. No knocking the end cover of the spindle motor. No hammering the collet and blade head when removing blades. No shocking or colliding during transport, storage and using, especially the end of the spindle motor.

    8. The spindle motor shall run in designated direction.

    9. The spindle motor shall be installed and fixed according to the relevant drawings and instructions.

    10. The temperature shall be within 22-25℃ if water cooling machine is used.

    11. The spindle motor adopts vapor lock and the gas source shall not be used until it has passed oil-water separator and dry filter. The air pressure is 0.2-0.25Mpa and the filtering precision is 5μm, otherwise there will cause damages to the bearing.

    How do I install the VFD with the spindle motor?
    We have recently received the 4.5kW spindle motor and VFD your company kindly provided to Collins Aerospace.

    Is it possible for someone at ATO provide the listing, and identification on this motor? Usually, the VFDs have a "labeled" indicating they have been tested by a Nationally Recognized Laboratory such as UL, ETL, CSA, TUV, or other NRTL.

    Would you have such paperwork for this drive such that we can install it according to the National Electric Code NFPA 70 (see article 100 definitions Identified, Labeled, and Listed). I was unable to locate the "listing" of the drive in the detailed user manual nor the ATO name plate of the drive.

    Please tell me what you can provide as I'm unable to "Legally" install the Drive without it being listed and identified by a NRTL.

    1. Our VFD only has CE certificate and EMC test report.
    2. The driver ordered is a customized version with single-phase 240V input and three-phase 380V output. This customized version is customized on our regular version, so you can Not see the related list in the user manual.
    You will notice: the 240V voltage connected to the input terminal is connected to the R, T terminals (the S terminal with the screw removed is Not available), and the motor is connected to the output terminals U, V, W.     The lowest rpm of spindle motor
    With a VFD what is the lowest rpm this unit is capable of?
    18000 rpm is too fast for the application we have.
    We will be operating in the 1000-4500 rpm range, is that feasible with this motor and the matching VFD?

    This motor and the matching inverter can make the motor run in the range of 1000-4500 rpm, but there is not much torque.
    We recommend a customized motor with 1000-4500 rpm.
    Do you have specific parameter requirements and dimensions for the motor?
    Please send us the size chart for further confirmation.

    1. Is your 4.5kW CNC spindle motor being on for long periods of time?
    2. 95% on time  for 8-10 hrs out of the day?
    3. Does air cooling require additional heat sink to keep it at safe temp?
    4. Is there a temp which should not be exceeded?

    1. Yes, no problem, it can be used for a long time,and the warranty is 12 months.
    2. No problem running 8 hours of a day.
    3. No other radiator needed.
    4. The temperature that should not be exceeded is 110 degrees.
